Janet Kaye McClung Scott passed from this life on January 10, 2023, at the age of 83 in Corn, Oklahoma. Janet was born on September 1, 1940, in Mangum, Oklahoma to Hurley Bryant McClung and Edra Niecey Harris McClung. Janet grew up in Granite, Oklahoma. She graduated from Granite High School in 1958. She attended the University of Oklahoma the first semester of her freshman year of college.

She married Jimmy Foye Scott on March 29, 1959, at the First Baptist Church in Granite. Janet and Jim were married for 64 years. They were blessed with a daughter, Susan Kaye, and a son, James Hurley. Janet enrolled as a full-time student in the summer of 1959 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

She was on the honor roll every semester. She received her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Business in 1962. She began graduate studies in the fall of 1962 at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. Janet completed her master’s degree in English in 1964. Janet began her teaching career in the fall of 1962, teaching English at Horace Mann Junior High School in Amarillo, Texas.

In the fall of 1966, she began teaching English at Lone Wolf Public Schools. She taught at Lone Wolf until 1978 and then began teaching at Mangum Public Schools. She completed her certification to teach work-study classes and taught at Mangum until 1995 when she retired.

She came out of retirement to teach English at Tyrone Public Schools for the 20052006 school year. She then taught English at Liberal High School in Liberal, Kansas for the 2006-2007 school year. Janet taught school for 37 years.

She taught English, Business, and work-study to many students in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Many of her students have told her how much her excellent instruction helped them in college and in life. Some of her students became English teachers themselves. Janet began taking piano lessons at the age of five. She began playing the piano for worship services at the First Baptist Church in Granite as a teenager.

She played the piano beautifully and was a gifted pianist. She played the piano for worship services at the First Baptist Church in Lone Wolf for many years and was a church pianist at Trinity Baptist Church in Mangum, Abundant Life Baptist Church in Mangum, and at the First Baptist Church in Russell. She played the piano for her father, Hurley McClung, to practice hymns to lead the music at the First Baptist Church in Granite.

Janet played the piano for almost every church service her children attended for all of their growing up years.

She played for weddings, funerals, revivals, and Bible Schools. Her family loved for her to play the piano at family gatherings so they could all sing hymns. She was also a gifted accordion player and could play many happy songs. Janet was a wonderful cook.

She loved finding new recipes and trying them until she got them exactly right. Her family will always remember her fried chicken, gravy, hot rolls, and baked rice. Her family remembers all the wonderful meals she made for them. She made wonderful desserts and her custard pie for “pie making day” was delicious. Janet was also an outstanding canner and jelly maker.

Her sand plum jelly and plum butter were absolutely the best ever. She gladly shared her canned goods with her family and friends. Being an only child, she enjoyed cooking holiday meals for her husband’s large family. Janet made beautiful quilts for her family and beautiful embroidered needlework pictures.

She also made beautiful, beaded necklaces for her family and friends. Janet asked Jesus to be her Lord and Savior and was saved when she was 6 years old. She led her children to Jesus as their Lord and Savior. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Willow, Oklahoma, and loved being involved in church activities.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Hurley and Edra McClung of granite, her grandparents, Jerome Buford and Dona Harris of Mangum, and John and Stella McClung of Granite. Janet is survived by her husband, Jim and son James of Willow. She is also survived by her daughter, Susan and husband Lyndal of Cordell, four grandchildren, Shannon Dershem and husband Warfield of Stillwater, Kerry Nelson and husband Tyler of Martinez, California, Kyle Stoup and wife Martha of Burns Flat, and Kelly Stoup of Orem, Utah.

She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren Ben, Abby, and Hannah Dershem of Stillwater, Kate and Caroline Nelson of Martinez, California, and Eli and Lydia Stoup of Burns Flat.

She is survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Janet used her gifts to honor God. She was a wonderful mom, grandmama, and great grandmama. Her family is truly thankful and blessed for her to have been in their lives. Janet was much loved by her family and will be missed by everyone who knew her. Her memory will be treasured.
